Decorating your home for the holidays brings cheer and warmth…but if you’re not careful, your roof can take a hit! This year, we want you to celebrate safely and protect your biggest investment at the same time.
Before you climb the ladder or plug in your strings of lights, treat your roof like the seasonal setup it is. Your roof system—including shingles, gutters, fascia, and downspouts—is designed to shed water, not bear extra weight or be punctured. One common mistake is using nails, staples, or screws to hang lights or decorations. These methods create tiny holes that let moisture in, allow freezing water to expand, and lead to shingle or decking damage.
Lightweight decorations, thoughtfully spaced attachments, and a pre-planned design all reduce the risk of concentrated weight or stress on one area. Consider the following:
Shingles protect your home by forming a water barrier. When debris, clips, or decorations damage the seals or granules, the roof becomes more vulnerable. Repeated foot traffic, tight clips, or improperly removed lights can knock off protective granules, making your roof’s shingles age faster.
Gutters also carry the water away from your home’s foundation. Heavy decorations or poorly placed clips can dent or detach gutters, block drainage, or warp the gutters and create areas of standing water. That standing water can freeze overnight and expand, damaging the edge of your roof and fascia. Use lightweight decorations, secure clips appropriately, and make sure downspouts are clear.
Even if the weather is mild, winter conditions can still expose your roof to risk. Cold shingles are less flexible. Wind and rain or early frost can combine with decorations to create stress points where none existed before. Keep in mind that a brittle roof surface plus added weight or pressure spells trouble for warranties and roof life.
Avoid concentrating heavy decorations in one spot. On larger homes, distribute the load and ensure that you don’t anchor inflatables or large props into the roof surface or gutters without proper supports.
Before you get started, make plan for both putting up and taking down your decorations. Avoid climbing on the roof unless you’re properly equipped and comfortable. Use a sturdy ladder, have a buddy spot you, and maintain three points of contact when on the roof.
When it’s time to remove decorations, take that same level of care again. Don’t yank a row of lights and drag down clips or shingles with it. Remove one fastener at a time and inspect the edge of the roof for signs of wear. Remember: a minor crack or loosened tab that you ignore now may become a leak during the next storm.
Give us a call after the holidays to schedule a quick, complimentary inspection of your roof. We’ll look for loosened or missing shingles, gutter sagging, or clip-marks. Catching those small issues early can prevent interior leaks or wood damage in the spring!
Decorating your home should bring joy, not regret. With thoughtful planning, the right fasteners, and proper installation and removal, you can make your home festive while protecting your roof and gutters from damage.
