When Can Hail Damage Your Roof?

Georgia is no stranger to severe hail! Every summer, thunderstorms throughout the state bring with them hailstones, some of which can cause severe damage. While it may seem strange to see ice falling from the sky in August, it’s the unique conditions within a thunderstorm that allow hail to form. Although it seems counterintuitive, summer is the season that brings hailstorms.

Fortunately, most home insurance policies include coverage for hail damage. But how do you know when to call, and how can you identify damage that has been caused by hail? The size of the hailstones you see on the ground are often your first indicator of whether your roof may have sustained damage during the storm.

Hail Damage by Size

Most hailstones remain small – smaller than a single pea. Most of the time, this type of hail is not dangerous to structures. However, if you do get pea-sized hail regularly on your property, it may do damage over time. In addition, the damaged caused by small hail is often difficult to detect. It may also be much harder to claim under your insurance policy since the damage is less obviously connected to the latest hailstorm.

If you have experienced a major storm with hail larger than a golf ball, you will likely see noticeable marks on your property and should assume that your roof has likely been damaged as well. Hail of this size can break windows, dent siding, and damage your shingles and flashing. Even without obvious damage, it is wise to have your roof inspected for damage.

Hail larger than a golf ball will undoubtedly leave you with a damaged roof and other areas of your home and property. Hail the size of a softball is a serious danger and can cause structural damage to your roof. Fortunately, hailstones this size are rare. However, if you see visible damage on your property you can reasonably assume that your roof is in need of inspection and repair.

When to Call Roofing Professionals

A severe hailstorm can leave dented cars, broken windows, and torn siding in its wake. This sort of damage will almost definitely prompt you to contact a roofer and make sure your roof is promptly repaired. But if you don’t see clear signs of damage around the property, does that mean you’re in the clear?

Unfortunately, no. Even if you don’t see obvious signs of damage from the ground, it is wise to have your roof inspected after a severe weather event. If you find that the hail has indeed damaged your roof and you plan to file an insurance claim to cover the repair costs, acting quickly is vitally important. Our team of inspectors and office staff can provide all the required documentation for your insurance claim. In addition, our team will work with your insurance adjuster to ensure that the full extent of the damage is covered and all repairs are completed properly.
